Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
RPL is a process where students use their existing knowledge, skills and experiences (gained through life experiences, prior training and/or employment) to demonstrate their competency in particular unit/s. RPL is an assessment process which requires the collating and presentation of evidence to support your recent experience.

How do I RPL a unit?
Gowrie SA has approved assessors for the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) national RPL asessment tool for Children's Services (Early Childhood Education & Care) including:

These guides cover each unit of competency for the qualification and requires students to complete three things. These are:
1. Answer questions provided
2. Provide evidence of implementation of the skills/knowledge
3. Have a supervisor sign that the competencies are completed consistently in the workplace.
Our Assessors will support you through the RPL process and identify areas where further training is required to fill any gaps.

What are the work requirements for RPL?
You need to be currently employed in Children's Services to complete RPL. The position you hold needs to allow you to demonstrate the skills required for the unit and/or qualification, e.g. if you are applying for RPL of the programming units at Diploma level, you will need to hold a position where you are responsible for planning and implementing the curriculum. This enables our Assessors to see you fulfilling the requirements of the unit to assess your competency. You will also need a supervisor in that workplace who is able to sign you off on the competencies required.

What if I don't meet all the requirements?
If you submit an RPL application and your Assessor identifies that you do not have the required skills and/or knowledge, your Assessor will help you to enrol in the required gap training which will allow you to gain the knowledge and skills required. However, if it is because you didn't quite understand the RPL process, the Assessor will provide you with support to understand what to do and will give you another opportunity to submit an appropriate RPL application.
